Henry A. Finn, MD, FACSHenry A. Finn, MD, FACS Henry A. Finn, M.D., F.A.C.S., is Medical Director of the University of Chicago Bone & Joint Replacement Center at Weiss. He is also Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center's Section of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine, as well as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Louis A. Weiss Memorial Hospital. Dr. Finn is internationally recognized for his skill in hip and knee replacement surgery. With more than 30 years’ experience in orthopaedic surgery, Dr. Finn specializes in adult reconstructive surgery and has led approximately 15,000 surgical procedures. He is also a leader in devising and applying the latest techniques, including contemporary minimally invasive and rapid-recovery approaches, advanced analgesic techniques, cosmetic wound closure, partial knee replacement, and hip resurfacing. Dr. Finn's extensive experience and his commitment to advancing the field of orthopaedics are reflected in his authorship of numerous peer-reviewed articles and exhibits, abstracts, and textbook chapters. He is the section editor of a textbook devoted to the reconstruction of the musculoskeletal system of patients who have metastatic cancer, and he serves as a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Arthroplasty.
Dr. Finn, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a prominent figure in joint replacement education and utilizes interactive audiovisual techniques to share live surgery with other physicians and colleagues, and with students, residents and fellows. He directs a fellowship in adult orthopaedic reconstruction and is frequently invited as a lecturer and guest at national and international meetings. In recognition of his leadership and the wealth of his knowledge, Dr. Finn received the Resident Teaching Award in the section of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Chicago.
As a result of his medical and academic achievements, Dr. Finn has received great acclaim from numerous well-respected publications. He was twice named as Top Doctor in the Chicago Metro Area by Castle Connolly Medical Limited and was twice listed among America's Top Physicians in Orthopaedic Surgery and Joint Replacement in the consumer's Research Council of America's "Guide to America's Top Physicians." Dr. Finn received the distinguished honor from his peers of "Top Doctor in Chicago" from Chicago Magazine five times.
Dr. Finn has invented multiple devices that are widely used in many major medical centers in the United States and abroad. He is the designer of the Finn Knee™ System, which is utilized for reconstruction of knees with difficult problems. As a testament to its clinical significance, the Finn Knee™ was recognized as one of the most significant advancements in the field of orthopaedics in the last century in the millennium edition of Orthopedics Today. His numerous other inventions include the OSS™ Orthopaedic Salvage System, a complete salvage revision/oncology limb-reconstructive system, the Balance® Hip, a cementless hip replacement which allows patients immediate weight bearing on the hip, the Vanguard™ SSK Knee, a super-stabilized knee used in complicated and revisional knee surgeries; the Balance™ Microplasty Hip, utilized in minimally invasive surgery; the OSS™ Salvage Cage, utilized for revisions in cases of catastrophic failure of hip replacement sockets, and the ECHO™ Microplasty Hip Stem, a shorter stem utilized for the anterior approach and is bone conserving.
Dr. Finn received his bachelor's and medical degrees from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, where he also completed an internship and residency in orthopaedics. In addition, he completed a fellowship in adult orthopaedic oncology at the University of Chicago Medical Center. He has been an oral examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons since 1994 and serves on the Operating Room and Medical Leadership Committees at Louis A. Weiss Memorial Hospital. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA), the Academic Orthopaedic Society (AOS), the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS), and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS).
Dr. Finn places great value on clinical excellence. In addition to performing hundreds of joint replacements each year, he has committed himself to addressing the most difficult "limb salvage" adult orthopaedic reconstructive problems affecting the hip and knee by combining his education, experience, and knowledge of joint replacement surgery, prosthetic design, allograft transplantation, soft-tissue reconstruction, and surgical oncology. Dr. Finn is developing a specialized in-patient joint replacement unit (Joint University) at Weiss Memorial Hospital with emphasis on rapid recovery, diminished postoperative pain, and a unique group approach to rehabilitation. His dedication is a testament to Dr. Finn's unwavering commitment to providing patients with expert care and the latest techniques in hip and knee replacement.
